Chapter 9

“I don’t understand. You’re telling me that the one person I wanted you to kill is now not only healthy, but he’s up and about as if nothing happened to him? How is that even possible? The last I had heard he was fighting to live from a horrific accident that you caused.” Carson didn’t say anything but nodded. Alfredo shook his head as he continued. “No, there is no sitting there as if you have it all figured out and thinking that you nodding like a fucking dog in the back of a car is going to satisfy me. Tell me what happened, starting with Golden and ending with how one of your men was killed during a simple clean-up job.”

“You want I should start from where I was or from where my brother was?” Alfredo only stared at the man. Who the hell talked like that? He told him to start wherever. “Well, I was at the Cooks’ house. Did you know that they have a butler? He is a strong motherfucker too. As soon as I came in the door, like he was all over my shit.”

“And that made it so that you couldn’t make an appointment for me to see him how? And if you tell me that you only roughed him up again, I will pull out my gun and shoot you on principle. Get to the point.” Alfredo could feel another headache coming on and it wasn’t even ten in the morning yet. “What happened at the Cooks’ house? And don’t think this will get you out of telling me what happened at the hospital.”

“I went there and knocked on the door like I thought I should have.” Alfredo reached into his top drawer, pulled out the gun, and sat it on the desk. “I’m getting there. I’m getting there. I went to the house and knocked, but Cook was coming up the drive so I waited. The big man, the butler, opened the door and kinda scared me a little. When Cook came up on the front steps, I was a little jumpy and I tried to explain why I was there. Suddenly he was all defensive like and I had to get out of there. But I did convey that you wanted a word with him and gave over that business card you gave me.”

Alfredo stared at him, trying to work out in his head how the hell this man had survived all these years without someone shooting him in the head simply to shut him up. He sat back down in his chair to try and reason through what was going on. Nothing came to mind so he simply asked what he needed to know.

“So not only did you maim the man, but you left my calling card there so they’d know who to contact in the event they want to press charges.” Alfredo decided that this man was much too stupid to live and actually thought of the bullet entering his head.
